“Deadlines come quicker than you think, so set a goal to have all your applications submitted by Thanksgiving. Waiting until after Thanksgiving will be cutting it close to the application deadline.” ~ Ms. Brooke Coyer

Applying to college is quite a lengthy and tedious process. However, there are many resources that make applying rather straightforward. A very practical online application, called the Common App, is used by over 700 colleges. Simply create an account on www.commonapp.org, and complete the application. Once the application is complete, it can be submitted to any school that accepts the Common App. This resource helps cut down on the number of applications students must fill out. Through the Common App, there is also a feature where students can request a teacher’s letter of recommendation, simply by entering their email address. Entering the teacher’s email will send a link to that teacher, and they can upload the letter using that link.

However, there are still many schools that do not use the Common App, so protocol among these schools is slightly different. In the case where a school requests official transcripts and letters of recommendation, there is a form on the North Pocono School District webpage that students can fill out and hand in to guidance. To find this form:
1. Pull up the school website (www.npsd.org)
2. On the left of the page, click on “High School”
3. Under “High School”, click “Guidance”
4. Click the red box that is labeled “Forms”
Once a student fills out the “College Application Request Form”, he or she can hand it in to guidance, and they will send official transcripts and letters of recommendation to the schools of the student’s choice.

There are several deadlines students should keep in mind when applying to college. If a student would like to apply either Early Decision or Early Action, their application must be submitted by November 1st. Early Decision is a binding decision, meaning if the student is granted admission to that school, they must attend, whereas Early Action is a non-binding decision, so if a student is accepted into the school, they do not have to go there. The deadline to apply Regular Decision is January 1st. North Pocono guidance counselor, Ms. Brooke Coyer, advises students, “Deadlines come quicker than you think, so set a goal to have all your applications submitted by Thanksgiving. Waiting until after Thanksgiving will be cutting it close to the application deadline.”
